Post-acceptance

Student visas

Students entering the United States to study at Missouri S&T as an exchange student and required to obtain a J-1 visa. Once you have been admitted as an exchange student, you will receive a DS-2019 form from Missouri S&T. You will be assigned a SEVIS ID number and will use this number to begin the SEVIS I-901 fee payment process and request a visa appointment. Review details about applying for a student visa

Arrival assistance

S&T International Admissions can provide arrival assistance for exchange students who fly into St. Louis Lambert International Airport (STL) on designated days around international orientation day. To request assistance, you must complete the arrival information form that will be sent to you within a month of your arrival.

Exchange student orientation

Missouri S&T's international student orientation day is highly encouraged for incoming exchange students. You will attend sessions for all international students to learn about Missouri S&T and then opportunities on- and off-campus, as well as a specific session for exchange students. You should plan to be in Rolla to attend these events, which are typically the Friday before courses begin.

If arriving for the fall semester, we also encourage attending Opening Week where there are many activities for students to meet one another, work on projects and see what S&T life is like. There may be an additional fee to attend.

Academics

Course registration

Review a full list of degree programs and details. You can find class availability for the next several semester by clicking on the relevant degree program. We recommend researching what courses are offered for the semester you plan to attend S&T to narrow down your course selection.

You must enroll in at least 12 undergraduate credit hours (or nine graduate credit hours).

Your S&T academic advisor will work with you to find courses that are suitable for you to take. Exchange students are required to take 12 credit hours, which is typically four classes. Some courses may require a permission number from the relevant academic department to officially enroll. Consider any prerequisites for S&T courses, and whether you reasonably meet those based on your academic record. It is helpful to be flexible and have alternate selections for each course you wish to take.

The study abroad coordinator will provide you with your S&T academic advisor contact information. You will need to contact your academic advisor by email and discuss courses that you would like to take and work with them to obtain any permission numbers.

The advisor will then remove the advising hold on your student account. In the case of an international student hold on your account, notify the study abroad coordinator at S&T to get it lifted.

To register for courses, log in to your Joe'SS account

Transcripts

When you have completed your exchange program and all bills to S&T have been paid, an official transcript will be sent to your home university. If you want a copy for your personal records, you can request an official copy through the Office of the Registrar or obtain an unofficial copy in Joe’SS

Housing

On-campus housing options vary in cost and amenities. Information about on-campus housing options and costs is available on the Residence Halls website. Prices listed are for a full academic year (fall semester and spring semester). If you will be studying at Missouri S&T for one semester, the rates will be approximately half of the rates listed on this page. Students who will be under the age of 21 on the first day of classes in the semester they plan to study at S&T are required to live in on-campus housing. For all other exchange students, our recommendation is to select on-campus housing.

As soon as you receive your student ID number, go ahead and apply for housing. Expenses

You are required to check your Joe’SS account regularly to see if there are any bills to pay. While exchange students do not pay the tuition and fees, other fees such as insurance, housing, international student fee, etc. will be charged to your S&T account. You are required to pay these fees at once or partially every month at the time of billing.

Health insurance

Health insurance is mandatory for all exchange students. An independent insurance carrier administers the policy selected by the University of Missouri system and the cost of the insurance is automatically charged to your student account. You can find more information on the Student Health website.

Note that if the embassy where you apply for your visa requires that you provide proof of insurance before your visa is issued, email studyabroad@mst.edu. We can work with you to provide proof that you will have the insurance through Missouri S&T instead of you purchasing insurance in your home country. This may alleviate the need to purchase insurance both in your home country and at Missouri S&T.

As a student at Missouri S&T, you may go to Student Health Services for many medical needs.

Exchange students are required to take a tuberculosis (TB) test. Schedule an appointment with Student Health Services within the first two weeks of arrival. A portion of the cost for the TB test will be paid by insurance, but you will be responsible for payment of approximately $50.
